Jonathan Cohen

With parents from Mexico and a San Diego upbringing, Jonathan Cohen was a product of the cultural heritage he was exposed to growing up. In High School, he would see the surfers changing out of their wet suits into their school outfits with only the ease and laid-back nature that one from a beach town could. With parents originating from Mexico, he was surrounded by strong-willed individuals who loved to immerse themselves in the colors and textiles reminiscent of their childhood. Eventually, when Cohen moved to New York City, the modernity of Manhattan and the on-the-go fluidity of the city shaped his design direction and inspiration - which eventually shaped the Jonathan Cohen woman. The Mexican prints and patterns and colors, the laid-back ease of the San Diego surf culture and the modern city approach have manifested into what the brand has become.

Cohen met business partner Sarah Leff while attending Parsons School of Design. Together, they formally launched Jonathan Cohen in 2011. After he received much recognition and encouragement from his peers and teachers for his senior thesis, he left New York and spent a year in California, where he continued to build upon his senior thesis by creating new pieces and silhouettes aligned with this final school project. He came back to New York City, connected with Leff and had his thesis (along with those new items he created while on the West Coast) photographer into a re-interpreted look book. Together, they selected a group of editors and stores and sent out their materials to gain market reaction. The attention was organic and began to build slowly, and as the conversations started to evolve, so did the definition of who the Jonathan Cohen woman is. She's an artistic female who values the story of the brand and the pillars in which it is built upon.

MARY KATRANTZOU

Born in Athens, Mary Katrantzou studied Architecture at Rhode Island School of Design and graduated with a BA in Textile design and an MA in Fashion from Central Saint Martins. Her graduation show in 2008, which featured trompe l’oeil prints of oversized jewelry on jersey-bonded dresses, took the industry by storm, immediately securing a number of prestigious stockists, notably Browns, Joyce, Colette. After her graduation show, Mary Katrantzou established her namesake brand. She now boasts over 100 high-end stockists ranging from Selfridges to Harrods.

Mary Katrantzou was dubbed "The Queen of Print" by the press, a moniker that recognized the enormous influence of her work in the medium. Katrantzou's work changed the face of twenty-first-century fashion, inspiring high fashion and high street designers alike. Prestigious collaborations have included capsule ranges with Swarovski, Victoria's Secret, Longchamp, Moncler, Topshop, Cowshed and Adidas Originals.

“Print can be as definitive as a cut or a drape and allows a woman to filter beauty found in design, in a subversive way. All my prints are constructed through digital technology. Digital print allows me to experiment with print in a way that fine art and other methods could not. It opens up a huge spectrum for possibility; I can create possibility out of impossibility, surrealism out of realism and both vice versa.”

Rosie Assoulin

Rosie Assoulin grew up in Brooklyn and always knew that fashion was her one true love. She dedicated her time to honing her skills, initially under the tutelage of her mentor and future mother in law, the veteran jewelry designer, Roxanne Assoulin, at Lee Angel. After a brief stint at the Fashion Institute of Technology, she found herself at Oscar de la Renta in New York City, watching the always elegant Mr. de la Renta drape, cut and pin his legendary designs. Later, Rosie sought out a life altering opportunity to spend time with the design studio Lanvin in Paris, where she bore witness to Alber Elbaz’s pure, unbridled creativity and unmatched design talent. Along with a few years in event and floral design, she found that every moment is an opportunity to cultivate her perspective. In late 2012, Rosie decisively turned back towards her first love, fashion, and her eponymous collection made its debut for Resort 2014. The Rosie Assoulin design aesthetic toes the line between the romantically fantastical and the reliably practical.

Theory was originally headquartered in New York’s garment district, the heart of the American fashion industry. There, our founders used their access to high-performance fabrications and local pattern makers to design pants that flattered everyone. They made button-down shirts that looked as sharp at the end of the day as they did at the start and jackets that were cut to make anyone stand a little straighter. With just a few staple pieces, Theory created a fine-tuned working wardrobe for men and women built around beautiful, everyday essentials. Theory is now designed in downtown New York’s Meatpacking District. We continue to offer men and women sophisticated, functional clothes made with integrity, innovation, and style.
